Orchids are a popular choice for adding a touch of elegance to any home. With their exotic shapes and vibrant colours, they're a feast for the eyes. But if you don't know how to care for them properly, they can quickly wilt and die. Don't let that happen to you! Here are three simple tricks to keep your orchids blooming year-round.

Why Orchids Wilt

Orchids are a diverse and elegant plant family, native to tropical and subtropical regions. They've adapted to various ecosystems, making them quite versatile. However, they can be delicate and require specific care to thrive. Common reasons for wilting include improper watering, lack of humidity, or too much direct sunlight.

Tricks to Keep Your Orchids Blooming

  1. Garlic Water for a Natural Boost: Garlic is a natural antifungal agent that helps protect orchid roots from harmful fungi and bacteria. To make garlic water, simply crush a clove of garlic and let it sit in a litre of water for 24 hours. Use this mixture to water your orchids once a month to stimulate blooming.

  2. Rotate for Balanced Growth: Orchids love light, but they can grow unevenly if they're only getting it from one direction. Rotate your orchid pot 45 degrees every two weeks to ensure all sides get equal exposure. This will prevent them from growing crooked and encourage more balanced and longer-lasting blooms.

  3. Banana Peel Fertilizer: Banana peels are rich in potassium and phosphorus, which are essential nutrients for orchid blooming. Place a piece of banana peel in water for 24 hours, then use that water to fertilize your orchids once a month. This will strengthen their roots and prolong the life of their flowers naturally.

When Do Orchids Bloom?

Most orchid species bloom once a year, usually in the spring or summer. Some varieties, like the Phalaenopsis, can bloom multiple times a year with proper care. To encourage blooming, make sure your orchids get enough indirect light, humidity, and a stable temperature. Water them moderately, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings, and fertilize them every two weeks during the growing season.

Post-Bloom Care

After your orchid has finished blooming, don't throw it away! You can encourage it to bloom again by trimming the stem just below the old flowers. This will help the plant focus its energy on new growth. It's also a good idea to repot your orchid every two years to refresh the soil and improve drainage.
